LCA procedure and documentation
INSIDE/INSIDE uses the LCA-method to present a product or project’s environmental costs and circularity. The result of an LCA calculation is shown in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
The flowchart below shows the process to acquire an acceptable EPD. Each step has additional information. Calculating the Material Circularity Indicator requires three additional steps. We recommend including these steps immediately when creating new EPDs. Contact us if you have questions about this process or for advice on how to approach the calculations.
Environmental Cost Indicator step by step
1. Check for yourself if an existing EPD qualifies
The Product Category Rules describe what requirements and criteria to which the LCA calculation and the EPD must adhere in order to be included in the database. This allows us to guarantee that product information and its environmental data can be objectively compared. An EPD must at least:
- Comply with INSIDE/INSIDE’s horizontal Product Category Rule (PCR)
- Comply with the product group’s Product Category Rule
- Be verified by a qualified verifier
- Be valid for five years after verification
2. Make an EPD with an LCA-expert
Use the Horizontal Product Category Rules outlined below, the specific Vertical Product Category Rules and the accompanying Review Procedure to deliver the correct environmental data. The EPDs should be delivered in JSON-format as well as described in step 5. Consult your LCA specialist for more about the information below.

3. Check existing EPDs and a quick scan by INSIDE/INSIDE
Do you already have EPDs but you are not sure if they are complete or fulfil the PCRs or INSIDE/INSIDE’s guidelines? Have the EPDs checked by us. INSIDE/INSIDE will have your EPDs verified by a qualified LCA expert as well as reviewed by our Technical Committee. This quick scan by the committee is initially a free-of-charge review to check if the EPD follows our guidelines.
If the EPD is accepted, it can be added to INSIDE/INSIDE. If the quick scan does not show whether the EPD qualifies, then a deeper analysis will be necessary. The costs for this analysis is €600 excluding VAT to ensure the quality and timely delivery of this verification. We will advise you where changes must be made to qualify. We can also recommend an LCA expert who can make the changes if requested. Contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org to know more.

4. Review procedure
One of the last steps in creating EPDs is the verification of the LCAs by an independent qualified verifier. A list of qualified reviewers and their contact details can be found here. If you know a verifier who is not on this list more information on how to be added to this list is given at the bottom of this page.
5. Deliver information in JSON-format
After finishing the EPDs, deliver the original EPDs and the data in JSON-format. This page explains how to make a JSON file. An LCA expert can help you to extract the data from the EPD and convert it into JSON-format. You can use this tool to convert into JSON-format. Send the original EPDs and the JSON-format files to email@example.com.
6. Publish product
Once the files have been received, we will add the EPDs to the INSIDE/INSIDE database and you will receive login credentials for your organisation. Once logged in you can add descriptions and images to advertise your product. These instructions show how you can enter the product information. After a last check by INSIDE/INSIDE the product will be placed online.
Material Circularity Indicator step by step
Read the instructions and methodology report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation for more background information. This presentation (in Dutch) by Mantijn van Leeuwen explains the steps, explained also in this video.
Calculate the Material Flow Analysis indicators. INSIDE/INSIDE has an Excel template available that could be of use, but you are welcome to make your own.
Follow the same procedure as delivering the EPDs (see step 5 from the Environmental Cost Indicators). Enter the data into the import spreadsheet, and convert it to JSON-format with the online tool. IMPORTANT: Material Circularity Indicators for existing products should be uploaded to the previously-made EPD import spreadsheet. Send the following documents to firstname.lastname@example.org to be included in the database:
- .JSON file including LCA data
- The Material Circularity Indicator calculations
- The LCA report
(This allows INSIDE/INSIDE to verify that the same end-of-life scenario and product composition as is used in the LCA. A statement to this effect from the original verifier of the LCA is also acceptable.)
Complying with the latest European standards
These step-by-step plans and documents will help calculate and create the Material Circularity Indicators. They allow you to show how circular your products are. Showing the Material Circularity Indicator of products is voluntary.
The standard for creating EPDs for construction, EN 15804:A1, is being adapted to a new standard for construction, EN 15804:A2. The new version has been approved in Europe and during 2021 INSIDE/INSIDE will start referring to this new version. How this transition will occur will be announced soon.
